Scope of ISO 29994:2021

ISO 29994:2021 — Education and learning services — Requirements for distance learning — was published in April 2021. It specifies the requirements for distance learning services that are not covered by ISO 29993:2017, so the two are used together rather than as alternatives.

It applies to any distance or e-learning service provider, whatever its size. Where a provider also delivers other kinds of learning, this standard applies only to the distance learning part of what it does.

The standard is written around the learner and the result of the learning, and it covers the full range of ways distance learning can be delivered.

How ISO 29994:2021 Relates to ISO 29993:2017

ISO 29993:2017 sets the service requirements for learning outside formal education generally. ISO 29994:2021 adds the requirements that are specific to delivering that learning at a distance. A provider running distance courses is normally assessed against both.

ISO 29994:2021 Certification Process

1. Application
   Submit your application to initiate the certification process.
2. Certification Agreement
   A formal agreement will be shared for your review and signature prior to commencement.
3. Stage 1 Audit
   A thorough review of your documentation, processes, and overall readiness against the applicable standard.
4. Stage 1 Audit Report
   A detailed report outlining findings, observations, and recommended actions will be shared with you.
5. Stage 2 Audit
   An on-site or remote assessment evaluating the implementation, effectiveness, and conformity of your management system.
6. Final Report & Certification
   Upon completion of the Stage 2 audit, a comprehensive report will be issued. Any identified nonconformities must be addressed before certification is formally granted.

Certificates issued by UCS are valid for three years and are subject to annual surveillance audits.
